Inmate rips out eye, then claims he ate it
Judge ruled him competent to stand trial after similar incident in 2004



A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye, authorities said Friday.

Andre Thomas told officers he ate it.

Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.

While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas similarly had plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and had him taken to the unit infirmary.

"Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman Jason Clark said Friday.

Thomas was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler after the Dec. 9 incident. Then he was transferred and remains at the Jester Unit, a prison psychiatric facility southwest of Houston.

"He will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1," Bobbie Peterson-Cate, Thomas' trial attorney, told the Sherman Herald Democrat. "He is insane and mentally ill. It is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."

Well, good for him, now he's blind! People will do ANYTHING to get the judge to think they've gone insane. Sure, it IS insane, but at least it looks like the judge wasn't fooled the first time, either.

Eye-popping story

I've said it before, you people are sick. It's so nice to find a place where I fit in.

OK, taking kind of a serious tack: Accident insurance policies often pay out the same amount for certain injuries as for death. For example, if a policyholder loses both eyes, he receives the same benefit payment as his beneficiaries would have received if he had died. Maybe the penal system should use this as a model. Now that this guy is blind, how likely is he to commit another violent crime? (To paraphrase the old saying, "See no evil, do no evil.") Unless the aim of capital punishment is retaliation or simply eliminating an unwanted citizen (rather than preventing future offenses), why not consider this guy's execution completed? I've heard that it actually costs much more in legal fees, etc., to execute someone than to keep them in prison for life. I'll bet establishing a home for blind ex-convicts and offering real rehabilitative training (braille, etc.) would be cheaper still. I think blinding might be a more humane alternative to frying, hanging, or lethally injecting - and even if it's not, doesn't it seem that a guy deserves some kind of break for taking such a bold initiative himself?

Great point... Though I seriously question your phrasing of "taking such a bold initiative himself" since I question his sanity enough to think it is not so much a bold initiative as it is an episode of the crazies.

It is hard for me to answer the aim of capital punishment since I have not been in the situation of wanting a guy killed off because thats what he did to a loved one. I can say that the aim is a higher and more moral one... However, if somebody were to, for example, harm my mother or nice I would likely be trying to harm them myself and/or push for severe punishment. Let's put this aside though for the sake of argument. I think the aim of capital punishment SHOULD be for rehabilitation. Now is a person really rehabilitated just because they can not see an easy target? I have to think the person would find a new way to do some harm... It may be more difficult... I have to assume the tendencies and/or the lack of conscience are still there with or without eyeballs.
