Man thrown in air at retirement party dies when no-one catches him

A 60-year-old Japanese man who was thrown into the air in celebration at his retirement party died after his colleagues failed to catch him and he fell to the floor.

It came to light after the man's wife, 59, filed a police complaint against colleagues at the transportation firm where he worked, accusing them of gross negligence.

The man died in September, 10 months after the party attended by around 40 people in Kusatsu, near the ancient capital of Kyoto in central Japan.
The fall damaged his neck and backbone, leaving him paralysed, and he eventually died of blood poisoning, the Mainichi paper reported on its website.

It quoted his wife as saying: "He worked until the retirement age. We had been looking forward to going to various places as a couple and were excited that we would be able to spend a relaxing time together.

Commenting on the incident, a representative of the company's headquarters said: "The accident was unfortunate, and we express our condolences over the fact that the man died. However, the farewell party was held voluntarily and as a company we have no particular comment."

Reminds me of that one Spongebob episode where everyone's throwing Spongebob into the air and shouting "Hip Hip Hooray" but in midway, squidward goes "Hip hip -- whatever." and walks off, so Spongebob smashes to the ground.
