Mice suspected in deadly cat fire

Mice or rats are thought to have chewed through electric wires.

Mice may be responsible for a blaze that killed nearly 100 cats at an animal shelter near the Canadian city of Toronto, officials say.

The fire at the humane society shelter in Oshawa also killed three dogs and some rats that were up for adoption.

An initial report from the fire marshal says mice or rats chewing through electrical wires in the ceiling are likely to have sparked the blaze.

Offers of help have been pouring in from animal lovers across Canada.

"It's unfortunate and ironic that mice caused the fire that killed the cats," Toronto Humane Society spokesman Ian McConachie told the BBC News website.

"Unfortunately, the mice probably perished in the fire as well," he added.

The $250,000 (£137,000) fire is still under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.

Mr McConachie said it would be some days before a final report would be released.

In all, only nine dogs, two cats and one rat were rescued in Wednesday's early morning blaze.

They are being housed in a nearby municipal shelter, while volunteers rebuild the burnt-down shelter for the Humane Society of Durham Region.

Yeah...I would make a joke about this whole situation...but hearing about it initially on the news really bummed me out for the rest of the evening. Sure, sometimes I get easily annoyed with my pets when they misbehave and such but it hits close enough to home that it makes me worry about my own guys.

Had this dream once there was a fire and was trying to get all my 3 cats and dog out safety and kept running into problems. I woke up fairly upset and couldn't get back to sleep after that until I checked to make sure at like 2-3 in the morning that all my animals were accounted for and were fine.

Just thinking about all those guys gets me a bit choked up. Stuff like this always makes me overthink. I loves my kittayz and doggay, even if they drive me nuts at times lol.

Yeah, add to the fact I watched this really sad song on youtube called "Cat Carol" a couple days ago (It's got a nice moral to it, but if you're like me, you won't get past the song without crying a little) and parts of it being stuck in your head and rehashing this story is like HUGE sadpandaface for me >_>;

If there's any good to this story it's at least there's no suffering now *reference rainbow bridge poem* and some of the animals got out.

Man if it wasn't the mice that caused this chaos and it WAS someone doing this unpurpose...I assure you they'd get a HOHOHO up their ASSASSASS and then some.

I actually feel sorry for the kittehs.

I just hope that their death was quick and un-painful.
